Diffractor is the fastest free photo and video organizer for Windows. It is designed to help you manage and organize your photo and video collection directly on your PC. The app indexes your files to enable duplicate detection, fast searching, and collection tracking.
It can view and search files, but collections include additional features such as duplicate detection, faster search, and collection tracking. These features are supported through indexed file data.
The goal is to provide the fastest way to edit and search photo metadata. Diffractor can play or display most media formats, although it lacks some features found in full media players. For example, subtitle support is not available.
Your collection is defined as the contents of one or more folders. These folders can be configured from the Collection Options screen (press Ctrl + F6). For example, all your family photos and videos may be stored across several folders — together, they make up your collection.
Diffractor can:
- View everything. View photos and play videos or audio files without switching apps. It supports most formats, including RAW photo files — no additional codecs required.
- Find anything. Search for any metadata attributes. Use the sidebar for an overview by date, location, or file type. XMP, IPC, EXIF, ID3, and most other metadata standards are supported.
- Compare and sort. Compare photos and videos side-by-side. Highlight the best items with ratings, tags, and flags. Prune the bad ones.
- Edit and fix. Add or modify metadata, including ratings, tags, and location details. Simple photo edits: Resize, rotate, crop, and adjust color.
- Never miss a file. Diffractor recognizes when files are already part of your collection. This is especially useful if you find an old memory card and want to check whether its contents have already been saved.
- Synchronise. Automatically synchronize your file collection to a NAS or network drive. Synchronization can be bidirectional, allowing you to collaborate and sync other people’s changes.
Presence
Diffractor checks whether files are present in the collection. Presence indicates whether a file exists in the collection or if a duplicate is already stored. It also shows whether an item has associated sidecar files.
Sidecars are additional files associated with a media item, such as XMP metadata or subtitle files. The presence tooltip lists the files Diffractor has detected, highlighting duplicates in red and sidecars in green.
Presence also works for files outside the collection. Use it to check if files on an old memory card are missing from your collection. Open the memory card and group files. Files can be:
- Have similar or duplicate files in the collection.
- Have a newer or older version in the collection.
- NOT be in the collection.
Folders Structure
The Import (F9) feature allows you to copy (or move) files into a year/date hierarchy, a common method for organizing photos and videos. It also supports other folder structures and includes an analysis mode that shows where files will be copied.
Not all locations are in the Diffractor database. The app can also use Google to find another location. This feature is available after buying Diffractor. Google location services cost money.
