X-plore File Manager is an excellent application with numerous features for Android, enjoyed by millions of users. Users can connect to cloud servers and manage local files on their devices. This application also enables connections to servers via FTP or SSH.

In addition to file management, X-plore File Manager supports direct photo viewing, music playback, video and movie streaming, and more.

X-plore is a powerful dual-pane file explorer that presents two folder views simultaneously, streamlining file management tasks. This side-by-side layout significantly simplifies operations like transferring files between directories. In addition to this intuitive drag-and-drop functionality, users can utilize the standard copy-and-paste method for enhanced flexibility.

X-plore displays the folder hierarchy in a tree view, providing clear orientation of your current location in the file system and allowing quick navigation to other directories. The currently selected folder and files are highlighted, while other folders and files have a slightly darker background for better distinction.

X-plore File Manager is free, but developing an app that functions properly and offers features takes significant time and effort. As a result, some advanced features are available only in the paid version.

X-plore File Manager Features:

  • Dual-pane tree view
  • Root access (on a rooted device) also allows changes to read-only files
  • Disk Map โ€“ see which files consume the most space on your disk
  • FTP, FTPS, LAN (SMB/Samba), DLNA/UPnP servers
  • Cloud storage access: Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, WebDAV, and others

The operations involve managing files and folders โ€” viewing, copying, moving, deleting, compressing to Zip, extracting, renaming, sharing, and more.

The interaction is through the touchscreen, where you can tap folders or files to open them, or long-press to open a context menu with options specific to the selected item or multiple items.

For enhanced efficiency, multi-selection allows you to apply operations to numerous files simultaneously. Individual files are selected via checkboxes, while clicking a parent folder’s checkbox offers a quick way to either select all files in that folder or clear the entire selection.

When opening a file, X-plore can either use one of its built-in viewers for common types such as images, audio, video, and text, or you can configure it to use a system application. If configured for system applications, the Android system launches a pre-defined app for that file type. Should multiple applications be able to open the file, Android presents a dialog allowing you to choose. X-plore visually indicates this by displaying a small question mark on the file’s icon, signaling that a system dialog for app selection is expected.

Often, a single application automatically sets itself as the default for a specific file type, like MP3s. While this is an Android system feature, it can sometimes be confusing for users to clear this default association. X-plore simplifies this process by offering a dedicated menu option to clear default application handling.
